When separating or divorcing, unintended consequences can profoundly affect children, even those not directly part of the marriage. A friend of mine experienced this when her former spouse, once very close to her niece and nephews, completely cut ties after their divorce, despite the children’s and family’s pleas. In mediation, outcomes like this are far less likely because everyone’s needs, especially the children’s, are considered.
